The Ruffled Shade

I've been working like a busy bee all summer long. We've got approximately 30 days of summer vacation left, so I'm trying to make every day count.

I got an itch to cover a lamp shade. Something I've never done before but have seen done all over blogland.

So, I took this old shade that was hanging out in my basement.

I bought some ruffled trim at Joanns & started gluing.

Somewhere along the way, I found a tutorial for making pompom flowers. (I wish I could remember where) It didn't seem too difficult, so I got busy making a few.

And this is what I ended up with.

The shade was originally intended for my living room, but I really loved how it looked in the bedroom instead.

I love it when a project actually turns out well. Believe me, I've had my share of disasters.

  15. How incredibly cute! So happy to have found your blog through pinterest. My silly little pup knocked my wine glass over and it splashed ALL over my cream lamp shade. I may be creating one of my own! Thanks for the inspiration.

    Have a wonderful week!

  16. Just wondering...What kind of glue did you use? Will the heat from the light melt it?

  17. Sasha Marie,

I didn't have an email address to contact you, so I'm hoping you will check back here.

I used a hot glue gun. I use the lamp every evening to read by & I haven't had any trouble with the heat from the bulb melting the glue. I'm using a 60 watt bulb.

    I hope this helps.

  19. hi do you remember how many yards of ruffles you needed/used?

  20. Anonymous,

I did not have an email to contact you directly, so I am answering here.

The shade I used measures about 45 inches around at its widest point. I bought 6 yards of the ruffle trim and had just enough.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

  21. I just might do this to a retangle shaped shade I have. I love the lamp, but it's too modern for our rustic design...Thanks for the inspiration!!

  25. Anonymous,

I actually started from the top! There was no science to this project, it was just something that I tried on a whim & it worked. :D

  26. Going to try this this weekend. How did the seam look? Did you cut each layer? I am assuming you did. Thanks

  27. Hi Jessica,

I didn't have a way to reach you to answer your question, so I hope you will see this here.

I did cut each layer of the ruffled trim. I would say to just match the seam up as best you can so it looks neat, but there is an obvious seam. Hope this helps!
